Artist's Description
The fortifications of Bourtange, in the Dutch province of Groningen, which reached their largest extension in the mid-eighteenth century, were completely dismantled in the nineteenth century. Only in the seventies and eighties of the twentieth century, the fortifications were carefully reconstructed. Now, a quarter century later, Bourtange looks like the fortress has never been away.
The map of Bourtange is based on a pentagon. This form can also be found in the pavement on the town square. In the middle of the square we find a pentagon of paving bricks, surrounded by cobbles. From that pentagon this bolpanorama was created.
The panorama is composed of fifteen different photos and subsequently extensively edited in Photoshop to give it a picturesque atmosphere and appearance.
About Frans Blok
I'm a photographer, designer and visual artist based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The Lowlands by the Northsea inspire me tremendously. The grandness of their landscapes, the intimacy of their towns. The canals and rivers, the harbours and boats, the windmills, churches and houses. The ever changing skies over polders and floodplains. For centuries, these lands have inspired painters like Van Ruisdael, Vermeer, Mesdag and Maris. I spend many a day exploring the Netherlands by foot or bike, capturing the beauty of the urban and rural scenery with my camera. This online gallery proudly shows some of my favorite images made on those expeditions. When I'm not out there making photographs, I'm either making artist impressions...
