Description
A minimalist digital painting based on a photograph taken at the pseudocraters around Lake Myvatn in northern Iceland. A volcanic landscape that feels somewhat alien due to its strange shapes and colors. This association is stengthened by the fact that pseudocraters, except on Iceland, only occur on Mars.
The sky in the picture was a bit too minimalistic so I replaced it with a spectacular cloudscape that I photographed one day later. As a digital painter I allow myself liberties that I don't have as a photographer...
A pseudocrater occurs when hot lava comes into contact with water. The water evaporates but cannot escape, until it pushes its way out with an explosion. This creates an annular hill, a kind of crater.
The duck in the foreground is, of course, unaware of this and of the fact that it forms a nice detail on a digital painting. Although, of course, you can never be entirely sure; one mustn't underestimate them ducks.
