Description
The concept of a space elevator is mostly known from science fiction. The idea was described by authors such as Arthur C. Clarke, Robert Heinlein and Kim Stanley Robinson.
Yet in recent years also organizations like NASA and Google started to study the possibilities. But first some technical and other problems have to be resolved before we will be able to travel to space by elevator. The main issue: which material is strong enough to build a 36,000 kilometer cable which will not collapse under its own weight.
Anyway, the idea is fascinating. This image shows the situation in which all problems have been solved. High above the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, elevator cars are coming and going in a constant flow and so are ships that take passengers and cargo further into space.
A rotating wheel-like structure can accommodate visitors who want to stay longer, if only to enjoy the amazing views.
