Description
Flatey (literally, the flat island) is a strip of land two kilometers long and a few hundred meters wide, in the Breiðafjörður in northwestern Iceland. At the end of the nineteenth century, four hundred people lived there; today, only a few. Except in summer, because the twenty-five houses are mainly used as vacation homes. The houses are therefore well maintained and it looks as if someone has carefully chosen the colors of the facades and roofs.
This digital painting is an adaptation of a photograph I took of the village, situated on a small bay on the north coast of the island. It was early May but there was a freezing wind and it had just snowed. In some places the snow still lingered for a while. There was nobody on the streets and this created an atmosphere that was both ghostly and picturesque; a wonderful combination.
