Untill a few years ago the island of Tiengemeten, near Rotterdam, was in use as farmland, but in recent years it has been transformed into a popular nature reserve.
This small windmill, pictured here against a lively summer sky, was used to lower the water level in the adjacent ditches and is one of the reminders of the agricultural past of the island
I'm a photographer, designer and visual artist based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The Lowlands by the Northsea inspire me tremendously.The grandness of their landscapes, the intimacy of their towns. The canals and rivers, the harbours and boats, the windmills, churches and houses. The ever changing skies over polders and floodplains. For centuries, these lands have inspired painters like Van Ruisdael, Vermeer, Mesdag and Maris. I spend many a day exploring the Netherlands by foot or bike, capturing the beauty of the urban and rural scenery with my camera.
